SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- A man was found shot to death and a nearby home caught fire Friday afternoon in Santa Clara, leaving both incidents under investigation, police said.
Authorities believe the shooting and fire happened minutes apart in a residential neighborhood near Enright Avenue. According to the Santa Clara Police Department, officers responded to Enright Avenue and found a man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Minutes later, a nearby house caught fire, prompting a large emergency response.
Surveillance video viewed by our ABC7 Eyewitness News team from across the street shows two men talking in a driveway around 12:30 p.m. Friday. One man then pulls out a gun and shoots the other, who falls to the ground. The victim is shot at least 10 more times before the suspect runs away.
"My husband and I thought they're making a movie here because we saw the big black van and saw cameras," said neighbor Marilyn March.
March said she returned home to find emergency crews using heavy equipment to access the burning house while heavily armed officers searched the property and worked to extinguish the fire. The response lasted for hours.
"It looked like something from a warzone when that thing showed up," March said.
Neighbors said the home that caught fire was a rental property and that a man had been staying there for about two weeks.
Police have not released the identity of the shooting victim, but neighbors said he was a father known in the community.
"We say hi. And we know each other because of this school," said neighbor Farid Davanloo. "Sometimes they have events in the school and they are there. They're very nice family."
As of Friday evening, police said no suspect was in custody and the investigation remained ongoing.
"It's really sad to see something like this happen when it's young people around, you know, kids play around," March said.
Authorities have not said what led up to the shooting, whether the two men knew each other, what caused the fire or where the suspect may be.
